What Remains

The calendar turns a page to September this week, and the garden is winding down. While the zinnias and cosmos have seen better days, the strawflowers and gomphrena are still thriving. The first year I grew gomphrena, I was fascinated by those bold, pom-pom-like buds, but the stems were so short that summer they proved useless for most of my vases. As a result, I skipped planting them for the past few years and decided to give them a second chance this summer. I have not been disappointed! With long stems and those jewel-like tones, I have found myself cutting small handfuls again and again. I heard someone say once that daisies are the friendliest flower—and if that is true, gomphrena may be the happiest.
