Nothing is Lost

There is a particular delight in finding an old stoneware pitcher in your favorite color—and even more so when it happens to be spongeware. There is also the particular disappointment of bringing it home only to discover a few hairline cracks and the unfortunate fact that it is no longer watertight. Such was the rollercoaster of bringing this beautiful old piece home. Disappointed but undaunted, I gave it some thought and found a clear glass cylinder that fit perfectly inside. Crisis averted, I headed to the garden to gather an armful of blooms that felt unmistakably like late August: saturated, buttery yellows and deep cranberry strawflowers, softened by a few delicate stems of blush cosmos. Against the blue and white spongeware, they were exactly right. And as I stepped back to look at the finished arrangement, I was reminded of something I seem to be learning again and again: Nothing is truly lost. Only reimagined.
