Founded in 1939, Castleton China was actually produced by Shenango China which was founded in New Castle, PA in 1901 and was sold off in 1992 leaving behind a 91 year legacy of American made dinnerware. Castleton's biggest claims to fame seem to be the Museum Shape products which were designed by Eva Zeisel and in 1955 the Eisenhowers commissioned Castleton to create plates for the state dining room of The White House. Castleton production ceased in 1974.
This pattern, called Ma Lin, was manufactured between 1948 - 1972 and features a bold floral design in gorgeous shades of yellow, red and green. The back stamp says it was designed by Ching Chih Yee who was one of 15 contemporary artists commissioned in 1942 to create designs for reproduction by Castleton. This large oval platter measures 15 1/4" long x 11 1/2" wide. It appears to have had minimal (if any) prior use and is in excellent condition.
